This building was originally built as the seat of the University of Buenos Aires in around 1880. It was the work of Pedro Benoit's son and was occupied at one time by the university's Faculty of Law.

The museum holds valuable collections of anthropology, archaeology, folklore and ethnography. The collection includes more than 150,000 artifacts and documents. Several times a year the museum offers exhibitions that deal with the country's original inhabitants, ceramics or textiles.

The exhibition halls have been prepared; within the framework of a project of valuation and restoration of the building that the Museum occupies from 1927. The circulation of American prehistory and the ethnography are on exhibit.

About 60,000 pieces are organized in three sections: Biological anthropology, Archaeology and Ethnography. The institution has recovered with fullness the functions of university museum that must include one maintained action of exhibition complemented with guided visits, factories, publications and other services for the public.
