The average English-speaking reader will probably see the word “villa” and think of a gorgeous estate surrounded by cypresses, such as in Under the Tuscan Sun.  I used to.  Now that I live in Argentina I see the word “villa” and I no longer pronounce it the Italian way, I pronounce it more like “veesha” and I definitely do not picture a beautiful large home in the Tuscan hills.  Even when I translate from Italian to English, the Frances Mayes-induced image no longer comes to mind.
