Timberland creator Nathan Swartz began his career as a trainee stitcher. In 1952, he bought some shares in The Abington Shoe Company where he himself started working.

In 1973, the Timberland name was born. "Timberland" started as the brand name for their original waterproof leather boots. Then, because the boot was so popular, the company name was officially changed to The Timberland Company. Later on, they also began to manufacture casual and sports shoes.
